Darak of Ddeir Ezzor Darak is a corruption of the word Dragoon, the horse mounted cavalery employed by most European states since the seventeenth century, and evolved into paramilitary force responsible for internal security. They were introduced in Syria by the French mandate to ensure security in the countryside and smaller towns, where police [al-Shurtta] was lacking.
